The Obligation That Follows Payment

When a buyer pays for an order, the seller's obligation becomes concrete. Up to that point, the transaction was a possibility — a listing, a question, a decision. Once payment is recorded, it becomes a commitment. The seller is now responsible for delivering the exact product that was purchased, in the condition that was described.

Fulfillment is where sellers build or lose their reputation. A well-fulfilled order earns a good review and a returning customer. A poorly fulfilled order produces a dispute, a refund, and lasting damage.

What Happens When Payment Is Recorded

Once payment has been successfully recorded, the process begins. The seller receives notification, reviews the order, prepares the product, provides shipping information, and dispatches the product. The buyer then receives it and either confirms delivery or raises a dispute.

Each step depends on the seller acting. Until the seller prepares and ships, nothing moves.

Preparing an Order

Before shipping, the seller should verify several things. Check that you have the correct product, the correct variant, and the correct quantity. Confirm the condition matches what was listed. Package the product appropriately. Check the buyer's name, destination, phone number, and any other required delivery information.

This verification step is short, but it prevents the most common fulfillment errors — sending the wrong variant, the wrong quantity, or the wrong product entirely. These errors are entirely avoidable, and each one creates a dispute that could have been prevented in minutes.

The Standard of Fulfillment

A seller should not knowingly send an item that materially differs from the order. This is the core fulfillment obligation. The product sent must match the product listed, in the condition described, with the accessories stated.

Sellers should also prepare orders promptly. Prompt fulfillment is a courtesy to the buyer, but it is also a practical matter — delays invite disputes and damage a seller's standing. A buyer who receives an order quickly is a buyer who is satisfied.

Packaging

Appropriate packaging protects the product in transit and protects the seller from disputes about damage. A product that arrives damaged because it was poorly packaged creates a problem that is difficult to resolve — the buyer received a damaged item, but the seller may not have caused the damage directly.

Packaging should be suitable for the product and for the delivery method. Fragile items need protection. Electronics need padding. Anything that could be affected by moisture or handling should be secured.

Why This Matters

Fulfillment is where the promises made in a listing are tested. The listing said the product was in good condition; fulfillment determines whether that is true. The listing said accessories were included; fulfillment determines whether they were packed. The listing said the product was available; fulfillment determines whether it was actually ready to ship.

Sellers who fulfill carefully discover that disputes are rare. Sellers who fulfill carelessly discover the opposite.
